Granada Geopark: a unique geological treasure in Europe
8,000,000 YEARS OF HISTORY
The Granada Geopark was born as an ambitious project aimed at conserving, studying, and promoting the exceptional geological wealth of the territory. This area stands out worldwide for its continental sedimentary record from the Quaternary era, considered the most complete on the planet.
Located in the southeast of the Iberian Peninsula, the geopark encompasses 47 municipalities located in the Guadix-Baza Basin, a large geological depression that began to form during the tectonic movements associated with the creation of the Alpine system. This area, also known as the Guadix and Baza Basin, is home to a unique combination of natural landscapes, cultural heritage, and geological formations, making it a prime setting for both scientific research and sustainable tourism.
The project not only has a conservation focus, but also an educational and tourism focus, aiming to promote local development through awareness and appreciation of its extraordinary natural environment.

A spectacular place to explore, visiting what was once a great inland sea millions of years ago. Stunning and unique landscapes and first-class archaeological remains remain from that time. The best way to describe this experience would be INCREDIBLE. We went with Miguel in his 4x4 since you can't go on a road trip in a regular car. He's a professional and clearly enjoys his job, and his knowledge is extensive. He explained and showed us some really cool places and is a great guide. It's worth hiring him, especially getting to know everything surrounding the Granada Geopark. It's a unique experience with tons of activities to do.
